INTRODUCTION

Jaemyn Brakefield was recruited to Duke, but in his freshman year, he had a marginal role off the bench due to Matthew Hurt. The following season, he transferred to Ole Miss, where he has been a significant contributor. Over his tenure, he has amassed over 1500 career points and grabbed 700 rebounds. While he was part of the starting five in previous seasons, as a graduate, he became the Sixth Man while still maintaining the role of the second scorer, behind Sean Pedulla but with a greater impact than Matthew Murrell in the run to the Sweet Sixteen, which the Rebels hadn’t reached in 24 years.

PHYSICAL

Jaemyn Brakefield possesses good athleticism and an adequate frame to play as a forward. His size and strength allow him to compete effectively in the paint, while his agility enables him to be dynamic and move effectively off the ball. Capable of absorbing contact, he demonstrates good lateral movement and balance, which aids in both offensive drives and defensive assignments. However, while he has a solid frame, there is room for improvement in his explosiveness and vertical leap to enhance his plays above the rim and rebounding presence. Overall, he is a player with a combination of size and athleticism to have an impact at a medium-high level in Europe.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Jaemyn Brakefield is a versatile scorer with the ability to stretch the floor. He excels in off-ball movement and his shooting mechanics are smooth, allowing him to be a threat in pick-and-pop situations (35.5% on 2.5 attempts per game in his collegiate career). Additionally, he has a reliable mid-range jumper and can effectively attack closeouts, resulting in him being a reliable finisher (57.4% on 5.2 attempts this season). While he can use his size to play in the post against smaller defenders, he lacks a quick first step off the dribble in face-up situations, struggling to create a pull-up from mid-range. However, he tends to be more of a catch-and-shoot player and could benefit from developing his off-the-dribble creation. He also contributes as a facilitator, with a ratio assist/turnover of +1.5 for a forward being positive, showcasing his ability to make smart decisions with the ball. He needs to work on his handling and pay more attention to forced plays, but overall he has a complete skill set.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Jaemyn Brakefield brings versatility to the court. His size and lateral quickness allow him to guard multiple positions, from every type of forward to occasionally the big man. On the perimeter, he can switch but may face difficulties against faster guards. In his NCAA journey, he averaged 0.8 steals per game, indicating limited aggressiveness on passing lanes despite having active hands. His understanding of team defensive rotations is good, as he often positions himself well to provide help defense. Nonetheless, increasing his concentration and consistency on the defensive end would elevate his impact, particularly against more aggressive offensive players.

IMPROVED AREAS

While Jaemyn Brakefield has grown into a reliable scorer and smart decision-maker, he still has room to evolve as a creator. His limited burst and average handle restrict his effectiveness in isolation or face-up situations. Developing a quicker first step and a more consistent pull-up jumper would significantly elevate his offensive versatility. On the defensive end, increasing his aggressiveness and staying locked in throughout possessions will be key to becoming a two-way contributor at the pro level. Additionally, enhancing his verticality could improve his impact as a rebounder and finisher around the rim. Overall, he is a rookie who can immediately provide a solid impact at a medium-high level with significant potential for Europe.
