INTRODUCTION

Nick McMullen was recruited by Murray State, but after two seasons with limited playing time, he transferred to UNC Asheville. There, he became a starting-five player alongside Drew Pember and Fletcher Abee, and helped the Bulldogs win the Big South in 2023 and earn an NCAA berth. The following season, he reached the Conference final before moving to the Panthers for his graduate year. He led the team in rebounds (2nd in the Sun Belt Conference and in the Top-20 NCAA) and recorded 8 double-doubles during the season.

PHYSICAL

Nick McMullen brings a sturdy, athletic frame with good mobility for a power forward or undersized big. His dynamism makes him a high-energy player, and he uses leverage effectively in rebounding and closeouts. He runs the floor well in transition. Solid at absorbing contact, he displays good coordination while having room for improvement in his vertical leap. However, while physical, he can be outmuscled by stronger bigs, and his wingspan is average, not elite. Adding upper-body strength and perhaps a bit more explosiveness would boost both his interior finishing and defensive presence.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Nick McMullen is an efficient finisher. He has a soft touch when approaching the basket, makes good use of footwork from the post – particularly from the left side, his strong hand – and can create space off the dribble and drive to the basket (54.8% from two-point range on 6.5 attempts). While the mid-range shot is a weapon he can utilize, he lacks consistency and volume from beyond the three-point arc (30.8% on 0.4 attempts). His dynamism and hustle allow him to excel with putbacks (3.2 offensive rebounds per game). His ability to attack 1v1 off the dribble needs to be managed with greater care to limit turnovers (1.8 per game) when trying to score inside without forcing shots. As a facilitator, he shows some passing vision from the post (1 assist per game). Overall, he lacks perimeter shooting and doesn’t handle heavy creation responsibilities.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Nick McMullen is a strong rebounder (9.5 per game), demonstrating great effort and positioning. He uses his physicality to contain multiple positions, and on the perimeter, he is able to switch. Lateral quickness is adequate, but he needs to pay attention to his aggression and seek contact to avoid issues with foul management (2.5 on average). He can improve his positioning and timing on passing lanes and in help defense, both in terms of steals (0.4 per game) and rim protection. However, when called to switch, he can struggle against quicker opponents.

IMPROVED AREAS

Nick McMullen needs to extend his shooting range and become a more consistent mid- and long-range threat, which would increase his spacing value as a modern power forward. Improving his ball security and decision-making when attacking off the dribble is also essential to limit turnovers and better read help defenses. Defensively, enhancing his timing and awareness in help situations, especially as a secondary rim protector, would add value to his positional versatility. Adding strength and vertical pop could help compensate for his average wingspan and elevate his finishing and shot contesting abilities. For his rookie season, his energy and solidity can secure him a spot in a mid-level league.
