INTRODUCTION

Cli’Ron Hornbeak played his entire collegiate career with the Golden Flashes. Over four seasons, he steadily progressed into a featured role, reaching three Conference finals and winning the MAC in 2023 while playing alongside Sincere Carry and Malique Jacobs. A part of the starting five for 68 times in his last seasons, he earned a spot on the All-Defensive Team in 2025 and wrapped his career sixth all-time in program blocks. His consistent availability and defensive impact helped Kent State reach the NIT quarterfinals in his senior year.

PHYSICAL

Cli’Ron Hornbeak boasts a strong, muscular frame with good lower-body strength that helps him establish position in the paint. He shows enough mobility to execute role duties on both ends. Although his explosiveness is average – not elite – rim-running speed. His physicality and dynamism make him a reliable presence on the defensive end also thanks to an adequate wingspan. However, he is not always coordinated and has room for improvement in balance when receiving the ball in motion and in reactivity. Enhancing lateral mobility and limiting his aggressiveness are important steps for having longer stints on the court (20.4 in his senior year, the most usage in his career).

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Cli’Ron Hornbeak is an inside player with high-efficiency finishing skills. He finished his college career with a 62.7% field goal percentage, confirming his ability to convert with touch and toughness in the paint. He scores from pick-and-rolls and offensive rebounds (2.2 per game in 20 minutes) and crashes the glass effectively. While he has some post moves, he is not a stretch big and has recorded no 3-point attempts but shows reliable free throw shooting (66.7%), indicating decent touch to develop. He lacks in game reading (0.4 assists per game) and face-up tools, but does the dirty work: his high shooting percentage comes from screens, offensive boards, and close-range rolls. He could benefit from adding mid-range shooting to diversify his offensive capabilities.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Cli’Ron Hornbeak has the tools to become an elite defensive anchor. He earned All-Defensive honors thanks to his rim protector ability (1.2 per game) and the dynamism that allows him to guard the paint. A solid rebounder (5.9 per game), he holds strong positionally but isn’t a traditional switch defender; his mobility is average, and he may struggle on switches to perimeter threats. His footwork is sound inside the paint, but he’s prone to fouls in space (2.8 on average). However, his energy and aggressiveness can lead to fewer minutes on the court. Overall, with timing and effort, he’s a reliable rim protector and rebounder, but not versatile as a perimeter defender.

IMPROVED AREAS

Cli’Ron Hornbeak must improve his coordination and lateral mobility to handle faster, more dynamic offenses. Reducing foul trouble and becoming more reactive on closeouts would allow him to stay longer on the court and maintain defensive stability. Expanding his offensive range, starting with a consistent mid-range jumper, could make him a more complete pick-and-roll/pick-and-pop threat. Finally, developing better game reading and passing feel would help him fit into more fluid offensive systems. His physical tools are there; the next step is unlocking adaptability and control. He can guarantee a good impact in a mid-level league with significant potential for development.
