POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Chad Venning is an old-school center. He began his collegiate career at Morgan State, where he found playing time in his sophomore season and then transferred to St. Bonaventure, where he became part of the starting five during the two seasons played. In the 2023–24 season, he was the team’s top scorer ahead of Charles Pride and earned All-Atlantic 10 Second Team honors. For his graduate season, he joined the Eagles to replace Quinten Post. Venning has continued to be a significant contributor in the ACC, ranking as the team’s second-highest scorer.
PHYSICAL
Chad Venning possesses a formidable physical presence, providing a strong interior presence on both ends of the court. His size and strength allow him to establish deep post position and effectively contest shots in the paint. While not exceptionally quick, his footwork has improved over his collegiate career, enabling him to navigate the post effectively. His conditioning has also progressed, allowing him to maintain his impact throughout games. However, further improvement in lateral quickness and agility would enhance his defensive versatility, particularly when defending pick-and-roll situations against more athletic and quicker opponents.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Chad Venning is a traditional low-post scorer who utilizes his size and strength to his advantage. He has a reliable array of post moves, where he has surprising footwork for his limited speed. His solutions include a reliable touch around the basket and hook shots. His field goal percentage of 54.8% on 9.3 attempts reflects his efficiency as a finisher. While he does not extend his range beyond the paint, his presence demands defensive attention, often drawing double teams and creating opportunities for teammates. He needs to pay more attention to his handling in doubling situations and his passing out of the post has shown improvement. However, he can further develop his ability to read defenses and make quicker decisions to reduce turnovers (1.8 per game). Additionally, enhancing his mid-range shot and face-up game would increase his offensive efficiency.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Chad Venning is a solid rim protector, averaging 1.6 blocks per game. His size and timing allow him to alter shots effectively in the paint. He uses his body well to establish position and box out opponents, contributing to his rebounding efforts. However, his lateral movement remains an area for improvement, as quicker opponents can exploit this on switches and in pick-and-roll situations. Enhancing his agility and defensive awareness would allow him to guard multiple positions more effectively and reduce foul trouble (3 per game over the last three seasons). He has good energy and leadership and is known to have moments of trash talking.
IMPROVED AREAS
Chad Venning must continue to work on his lateral quickness and overall agility, as he often struggles to defend quicker players in pick-and-roll and switch situations. Developing his face-up game and extending his offensive range – even to the mid-post – would make him a more versatile scoring threat. His passing out of double teams remains inconsistent, and improving his decision-making under pressure is key to reducing turnovers. Finally, gaining greater defensive discipline to avoid foul trouble could help maximize his availability and impact in professional settings. Overall, he is an old-school player who can provide significant tactical impact. For the rookie season, a mid-level European league, perhaps in a context not high in pace, could be ideal. A profile that could also attract interest in Asia.
