ACTUAL
POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
After four seasons at Bucknell, during which he scored over 1000 points and was named twice to the third team of the Patriot League, Xander Rice’s choice was to transfer to the Hawks, where he found his father as the head coach. Leading the team in statistical terms, he is the second scorer in the CAA after the scoring machine Tyler Thomas. A candidate for the CAA first team in his graduate year
PHYSICAL
Xander Rice has a good size to play as a handler, although thanks to his dynamism and mobility, he is very effective in off-the-ball situations. A good athlete, capable of attacking the rim and absorbing physical contact. Quick to run the field, he has reactive hands and good lateral mobility. Overall, he has a combination of good physical and athletic tools
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Xander Rice is a combo guard who plays best as a secondary handler. Good at moving off the ball, he has great quickness to take a catch and shoot coming off screens or hand-off situations. He splits his shots: at the rim in half, demonstrating good slasher skills in which he shows off his athletic qualities. The other half it’s the main weapon with the shooting from beyond the three-point arc (36.4% on 7.4 attempts). His selection shot can be improved as he shot above 40% from the field in just his final season at Bucknell. He compensates with excellent clutch skills which lead him to take responsibility in crunch time even with excellent results. During the set-up phase he always plays in pick and roll with a fair ability to involve his teammates (3.5 assists) but must pay more attention to choices and superficial passes that cost lost possessions (2.3 turnover)
DEFENSIVE PHASE
He uses his good size and lateral mobility to limit opponents in 1v1 situations but has no particular energy in his own half. He ‘s not very aggressive on the perimeter and the recovery possessions (1.4 steals) are mostly due to his reactive hands when doubling or stealing from the dribble behind the opponent. The limited number of fouls committed confirms a fairly peaceful nature and even on rebounds he grabs a limited number of them (2.4 per game)
IMPROVED AREAS
Xander Rice is a combo guard with good scoring skills but he needs to improve his shot selection and give more hustle presence in his own half of the court. The talent is evident but he must put more energy into his game. The same which he manages to show in the head to head games, where showing good leadership. He could be an important scorer in a medium-low level league from his first year as a professional
