ACTUAL
POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Robert Smith began his collegiate basketball career at West Chester, where he made significant contributions over three seasons. He earned Second Team All-PSAC East honors each year, showcasing his consistent performance. After scoring over 1300 points, he sought to compete at a higher level, transferring to the Hornets for his senior season. There, he led the team in scoring and formed a dynamic duo with Martaz Robinson, helping Delaware State achieve a positive record (16-14) that had not been seen since 2012. He was named to the All-MEAC Second Team.
PHYSICAL
Robert Smith possesses a solid build for a combo guard with a well-defined upper body. His compact frame allows him to absorb contact when driving to the basket. While not exceptionally tall, his strength and agility enable him to navigate through defenses. He runs well on the court, is reactive, and although he does not have elite explosiveness, he is able to create his own space. However, his height may present challenges when playing against taller opponents or finishing over larger defenders in the paint. Overall, he is slightly undersized for a guard but has a physicality that allows him to compete.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Robert Smith is a prolific scorer with a versatile offensive arsenal. His shooting selection is divided between pull-up mid-range shots and three-pointers; he drives to the basket attacking almost to the left, his strong hand, which helps defenses limit that option. He excels in catch-and-shoot situations beyond the arc but can create his own shot off the dribble (36.4% on 7.2 attempts over the last two seasons). He can act as a handler but is more effective in off-ball situations. While he has good passing skills (2.9 assists per game), he needs to improve in managing reads and decision-making; his assist-to-turnover ratio of +1.1 is not impressive and is the highest of his collegiate career. He can run offensive sets with a pick and roll but may struggle to get his teammates in rhythm.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Robert Smith is active on defense and possesses quick hands, averaging 1.6 steals per game during his senior year. His lateral quickness allows him to stay in front of opposing guards and he is strong enough to go through screens while absorbing contact. However, his concentration and energy are not always on focus and he can struggle with the timing of rotations. Despite his size, he managed to contribute 3 rebounds per game, indicating his responsiveness. However, his height can be a disadvantage when he finds himself in mismatch situations in the paint or when facing more athletic and physically strong opponents.
IMPROVED AREAS
To enhance his impact at the professional level, Smith must focus on three main areas. First, he needs to sharpen his decision-making as a ball-handler, particularly in pick-and-roll situations and under pressure, an area that limits his potential as a lead guard. Second, developing alternative finishing tools such as floaters or better use of angles could help compensate for his size when finishing around the rim. Lastly, he must strive for greater consistency and discipline on defense, maintaining focus and effort across all possessions to maximize his two-way potential. He can have an immediate positive impact in a mid-to-low level European league.
