POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Joe Bryant played all five years with the Spartans, during which he scored over 1,700 points, grabbed more than 500 rebounds, and dished out 300 assists. While he won the MEAC title twice (2021 and 2022), he lost the Conference final in 2023 by just one point, despite scoring 18 points in the second half of what was his final collegiate game. Named the Conference Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023, in his last year he was also selected to the All-District First Team and invited to the PIT.
PHYSICAL
Joe Bryant is very well built in the upper body, which helps him maintain contact on both sides of the court. His athleticism is average, and he is slightly lacking in height to play all the wing positions. He has good reactivity, quick hands, and decent lateral mobility. He covers the court well in transition, although he is not the fastest, and in one-on-one situations, he tends to create space with his body rather than beating his direct opponent with his first step.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Joe Bryant is a skilled scorer capable of scoring off the dribble but prefers to attack the rim due to a body suited for absorbing physical contact. He doesn’t have an explosive first step, but once he creates space from his direct opponent, it becomes difficult to contain him. Which makes him a good free throw generator he converts at satisfactory rates (86.6% during his college career with two seasons above 90%). He doesn’t shy away from attacking lighter match-ups from the low post, while his three-point shooting is solid and continuously improving (37% in his final year). In this scenario, he prefers to get into rhythm on his own, while on kick-outs he tends to beat the close-out looking for a floater or attacking the rim. As a ball handler, he doesn’t have great reads but is very effective in pick and roll situations: teammate Kris Bankston has collected many highlights thanks to the timing of his assists (3.1 on average), and the turnover ratio is positive (+1.4), but he is not a floor general.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Joe Bryant is a very physical defender with quick hands and a tendency to double team, which ensures good numbers in steals (1.8 per game). However, he has some discipline issues that allow inviting spaces if the blitz doesn’t succeed. Difficult for opponents to move, he suffers from less than stellar lateral mobility against direct rivals with quick steps; on the flip side, he can make life difficult in mismatch situations for an interior player. A good rebounder for his size, averaging over 4 rebounds thanks to his quickness.
IMPROVED AREAS
Joe Bryant, on the offensive end, tends to be too selfish, and his drives to the basket often lead him to exaggerate, risking too many possessions or committing offensive fouls. His shot selection tends to be a bit excessive, with forced attempts not being uncommon. On defense, he needs to learn to chase the ball less, as this risks opening up dangerous easy paths to the basket. His potential is significant; physically, he is a player capable of making an immediate impact in Europe and could find a place on a mid-tier team in a major league or with a top team in a lower division.
