INTRODUCTION
Walter Peggs began his collegiate career at the JuCo level, transferring to Tennessee Tech but failing to find playing time. With Spring Hill in D-2, he became a key player, starting in the starting five and becoming the main scorer. In the 2023-24 season, he earned a spot on the DII HBCU All-America Second Team and was named to the SIAC All-Conference First Team. He led the Conference in both three-pointers per game and total three-pointers, placing him just outside the national top 10 in these categories. In his senior season, he was the third scorer in all of Division II, being named again to the SIAC First Team before transferring to the Bears for his graduate year.
PHYSICAL
Walter Peggs is not an elite athlete but has a well-sculpted body suitable for playing as a swingman, offering a good balance of size and agility for his position. He moves well on the court and has a good sense of positioning, although he may lack elegant and smooth movements, he proves to be reliable. Despite his height advantage for a guard, he lacks elite explosiveness, which can limit his ability to finish through contact in the paint. However, his lateral mobility has room for improvement, and he could work on his reactivity since he sometimes appears passive on the court.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Walter Peggs is primarily known for his elite perimeter shooting: 42.1% on 9 attempts per game. Notably, he had a 7/12 performance against South Alabama in Division I. His three-point percentage is fueled by a quick release and consistent mechanics, which baffles purists as it appears to be an uncoordinated shot. His ability to stretch defenses makes him a valuable weapon in half-court sets, and he thrives in spot-up situations as well as off screens, but he can create space for a step back off the dribble. In addition to his shooting, he can occasionally attack the basket with a controlled handle, but primarily drives to the rim in fast-break situations. However, he needs to improve his shot selection under defensive pressure and develop his playmaking ability to diversify his offensive impact. Currently, he is capable of playing off-the-ball or in isolation but struggles to involve his teammates.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Walter Peggs leverages his length to guard multiple roles but does not always have the necessary discipline and energy to disrupt passing lanes and generate turnovers. His lateral mobility allows him to stay in front of quicker guards, but lapses in attention make him an inconsistent and unreliable defender on the perimeter. While he shows strong instincts in anticipating plays to run in open court, his lack of elite physicality can make it challenging to contest effectively against larger opponents or fight through screens. Improved strength and defensive discipline will help Peggs better manage these matchups.
IMPROVED AREAS
Walter Peggs needs to work on expanding his offensive versatility, particularly as a secondary ball-handler and playmaker. Enhancing his strength will improve his defensive capabilities and help him finish more effectively at the rim against physical defenders. With his shooting ability and scoring skills, Peggs has the potential to contribute in professional settings, especially in leagues emphasizing three-point shooting and perimeter-oriented gameplay. His ceiling could align with a role as a rotational guard or specialist in good-level overseas leagues or a top scorer in an entry league that could be the ideal role for his rookie year.
