Don McHenry

INTRODUCTION

Don McHenry played in three different college teams during his first three seasons, achieving significant accolades along the way. Recruited to Hawaii-Hilo in D-2, where he played alongside Darren Williams, he was named to the Pac West Third Team as a freshman. After transferring to Indian Hills, he was selected for the All-American First Team at the JuCo level before moving on to the Hilltoppers. In his first season, he secured the C-USA MVP and the title for the Conference Tournament by scoring 25 points in the final game. He was a member of the First Team C-USA 2024 and Second Team C-USA 2025 before transferring for his graduate season to Utah.

PHYSICAL

Don McHenry isn’t the most imposing guard physically. He doesn’t reach 190 cm with a lean build. However, he compensates for his lack of size with good speed, agility, and lateral quickness. He is a reactive player, full of energy and with a winning attitude, which he combines with good athleticism. His lack of size and strength can be a challenge when defending bigger guards or finishing through contact inside the paint.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Don McHenry excels with his quick first step and ability to change direction rapidly, making him a difficult player to defend. He’s particularly dangerous when shooting off the dribble, as his quick release allows him to get shots off even against tight coverage. His ability to attack off the bounce makes him a dual threat, capable of driving to the basket or pulling up effectively from mid-range (46.6% on 7.8 attempts). He can also take a shot from beyond the three-point line, creating space for himself or as a spot-up shooter, although it’s not his most consistent option (31.2% on 6.5 attempts). However, his lack of size limits his effectiveness when finishing at the rim against taller defenders, as he struggles to absorb contact and convert in traffic. His scoring abilities, and the leadership to elevate his game in crucial moments are hindered by limited playmaking skills. While he possesses great handling ability to create an advantage, he often finds his teammates only in pick-and-roll situations, but he struggles to read the defense and generate forced situations. His assist-to-turnover ratio is +1.2, confirming the growth potential in managing possessions.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Don McHenry relies on his speed and quick hands to disrupt opponents, particularly on the perimeter. He can be a pesky on-ball defender against guards of similar size, getting into passing lanes and generating steals (1.4 per match). His lack of size and strength can make him a liability when matched up against bigger guards. Forwards and big-mans can overpower him or shoot over him. Additionally, he can sometimes gamble too much on steals, leading to defensive breakdowns. Improved discipline and understanding of defensive rotations will help him become a more reliable defender.

IMPROVED AREAS

Don McHenry has great scoring abilities, especially thanks to his 1v1 off the dribble skills. His winning attitude is his most important skill, but he needs to improve in playmaking. Being able to create more for his teammates would make him versatile and complete. Working on his physicality would help him have an impact on the defensive end. Where he needs to ensure better discipline. Overall, he’s a player with a promising upside and distinctive characteristics that will make him a protagonist in the season.
