INTRODUCTION

Kendal Coleman began his collegiate basketball career at Northwestern State University, where he made an immediate impact. In his sophomore year, he averaged a double-double with 15.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, leading the team in both categories. His performance earned him a spot on the First Team of the Southland Conference and in the Defensive Team. Following his standout season, Coleman transferred to LSU. With the Tigers, he played a limited role in his team’s disastrous season (2-16 in the SEC). Seeking increased playing time and a more prominent role, he moved to the Lancers, where after a season rotating off the bench, he became a key contributor. In his graduate year, he became part of the starting five and returned close to a double-double average.

PHYSICAL

Kendal Coleman possesses a strong and well-built physique that allows him to be versatile. His size and strength enable him to be a solid presence in the paint where he can absorb contact. He exhibits good mobility for his size, allowing him to run the floor effectively and contribute to transition plays. While not exceptionally explosive, his adequate vertical leap combined with a good sense of positioning aids in rebounding efforts. However, there is room for improvement in his lateral quickness and responsiveness, but overall he is an athlete with important tools.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Kendal Coleman has expanded his offensive game, which was characterized by his efficiency around the rim and his prowess in the low post. His three-point shooting is not yet at high volumes but appears consistent (37.3% on 2.3 attempts) after an overall 1/8 in the previous four years. This ability to stretch the floor is combined with his skills to convert high-percentage shots (57.1% from 2-P on 5.8 attempts). His offensive repertoire includes effective post moves where, in addition to having good footwork with his back to the basket, he can attack slower opponents off the dribble when facing the basket, along with a reliable mid-range jumper. His dynamism makes him a good rebounder (2.8 per game) and effective on cuts from the baseline. On the perimeter, after screens, he has shown decent timing in rolling to the basket and now also in popping out for a shot, although he struggles with reading the game.

However, his role as a facilitator has been inconsistent, indicating a need for improvement in this area. His assist numbers are relatively low, suggesting limited playmaking abilities from the post position or on the perimeter. Additionally, he needs to improve his possession management and handling skills (1.8 turnovers).

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Kendal Coleman leverages his size and strength to be an effective interior defender. His strong rebounding skills are evident, and his ability to establish position and good timing makes him a potential double-double threat (8.3 rebounds per game in 26 minutes). He does not have the verticality to be a rim protector (0.6), but he is useful in blocking guards who drive to the rim. However, his average lateral quickness can be a liability when defending quicker, more agile forwards, potentially limiting his effectiveness in switch-heavy defensive schemes. Overall, he is a solid defender who needs to acquire greater versatility on the perimeter.

IMPROVED AREAS

For his transition to professional basketball, Kendal Coleman should focus on several aspects. Firstly, he needs to improve his court vision and facilitating skills to reduce turnovers while also having greater versatility when in possession. Secondly, he must continue to develop his three-point shooting to become a constant threat from beyond the arc, increasing his attempt volume while maintaining effectiveness. Finally, he should work on his lateral quickness to become more effective in perimeter defense against quicker opponents. With these improvements, he could aim to reach good-level leagues thanks to his versatility and physical presence. For his rookie season, he might find playing time in a mid-to-low level league to gain confidence and continue his development.
