INTRODUCTION

Stephan Swenson is a Belgian point guard who has seen continuous growth in his collegiate career at Stetson University, where he made significant contributions over four seasons. In his junior year, he was named to the Third-Team Conference, with the most important season following: Atlantic-Sun Conference title, selection to the All-Team Tournament thanks to a buzzer beater that decided the semifinal, and inclusion in the Second-Team. Following his tenure at Stetson, where Swenson is the program’s all-time assists leader with 603, he transferred to the Gauchos for his graduate year.

PHYSICAL

Stephan Swenson possesses a solid build for his role, with a well-sculpted upper body that allows him to handle physical contact. While not exceptionally tall, his physicality enables him to compete effectively against opponents. Quick, he runs well on the court, and his agility and balance further enhance his ability to execute quick directional changes, making him a versatile player. He has good lateral mobility and is reactive; he can improve in terms of consistency and energy throughout the duration of the game.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Stephan Swenson is a proficient floor general, demonstrating a keen court vision and the ability to facilitate offensive plays. During his four seasons at Stetson, he averaged 4.9 assists per game, highlighting his capacity to create scoring opportunities for teammates. An adept handler at reading situations in the pick-and-roll, he can gain an advantage by beating his direct opponent in a one-on-one off the dribble. He possesses strong slashing abilities at the rim (45.5% from 2-P on 7.9 attempts last season), while he has room for improvement in the mid-range, struggling to find the right balance for his shot.

He can take three-point shots both off the dribble and in catch-and-shoot situations, but his consistency has been an issue (32.4% on 4.1 attempts at Stetson). Notably, his shooting percentage has seen significant improvement at Gauchos, boasting a 44.8% success rate on 5.6 attempts, ranking him in the Top 20 nationally. He has shown solid leadership and clutch abilities, proving to be a reliable and steady player, even if not one with elite talent.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Stephen Swenson utilizes his agility and basketball IQ to effectively guard opposing players. His lateral quickness enables him to stay in front of his opponent, and his active hands contribute to steals (1.5 per match). The timing of his rotations is not always precise and can create gaps. However, his average size may present challenges when matched in mismatches. He is not a particularly energetic player, which could potentially impact his effectiveness in certain defensive matchups.

IMPROVED AREAS

Stephan Swenson is a player with a great basketball IQ and leadership; he may lack upside but is reliable. He should focus on maintaining a higher level of energy and consistency throughout games. Developing a reliable mid-range shot would greatly enhance his scoring versatility. Defensively, improving his timing on rotations and strengthening his physical presence would make him a more complete defender, better equipped to handle mismatches. With a European passport, he can aim for good level teams in Spain or France in the second division. Also, the BNXT League seems to be a good option.
