POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Colby Rogers is a swingman who has demonstrated scoring prowess throughout his collegiate career. He began at Cal Poly, where he played for two seasons, then transferred to Siena, where he earned All-MAAC Second-Team honors in 2022. He then moved to Wichita State, and after a redshirt season, he led the team as the top scorer and set a school record with 99 made three-pointers in a single season. Rogers has since transferred to the Tigers for his graduate senior year, where he is a starter on a Top 25 NCAA team.
PHYSICAL
Colby Rogers is a dynamic player who possesses a decent size but limited physicality; adding muscle mass could enhance his ability to absorb contact. While not known for elite athleticism, he exhibits sufficient agility and quickness to navigate the perimeter effectively. He has good lateral mobility and runs well on the court, but in terms of reactivity and energy, he can have moments where he appears passive on the court.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Colby Rogers is primarily recognized for his shooting ability, particularly from beyond the arc. During the 2023-24 season at Wichita State, he shot 40.9% on 7.1 attempts per game from three-point range, leading the American Athletic Conference, and made at least one three-pointer in every game but one. He is excellent at moving off the ball and is very reliable in catch and shoot situations, but he can also create space off the dribble. He effectively uses his teammates’ screens to create favorable positions even from mid-range jumpers, but improving his ball-handling and playmaking could make him a more versatile offensive threat. Rogers struggles to attack the rim and prove to be a credible finisher (39.1% on 2-point attempts with 6.9 tries) While his primary role has been as a scorer, he has room to develop as a facilitator (1.9 assists per game last year).
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Colby Rogers has shown the ability to contribute; his size and good lateral mobility allow him to potentially guard opponents on the perimeter. However, he is not particularly known for his defensive prowess and could benefit from increased focus on this aspect of his game. Enhancing his defensive awareness would enable him to guard multiple positions more effectively. At the moment, he may struggle in situations where he is attacked by physically stronger opponents and needs to have a reliable rim protector behind him; at Wichita State, it was Quincy Ballard, now at the Tigers, it’s Moussa Cissè and Dain Dainja.
IMPROVED AREAS
Colby Rogers should focus on diversifying his offensive skill set beyond perimeter shooting. Developing more playmaking skills and improving his ability to finish at the rim would make him a more complete all-around player. Additionally, enhancing his defensive capabilities and physicality will be crucial for his transition to higher levels of competition. With strides made in these areas, his potential is excellent; his shooting abilities and the capacity to cover multiple roles make him an intriguing player. If he doesn’t choose to try the G-League, hoping to impress with his perimeter shooting, he is a suitable profile for a mid-level European league for his rookie year.
