INTRODUCTION
Khalil Brantley was recruited to La Salle, after a freshman season coming off the bench he became a stable presence in the starting five. He was the top scorer for the Explorers for two seasons, nearing 1,200 career points which he will surpass while wearing the Cowboys’ jersey in which he transferred for his senior year. He also has a high volume in terms of assists with over 300 distributed in his first three years of NCAA.
PHYSICAL
Khalil Brantley doesn’t have a significant size but showcases a compact and sturdy frame. He has good athleticism, combined with quick acceleration and the ability to run the floor fast, making him difficult to contain at high pace. Despite not being the tallest point-guard, he compensates with a great body control and strength that helps him absorb contact. He has excellent lateral mobility and overall, he is a player with great energy and responsiveness who is not afraid to dive for a fifty-fifty possession.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Khalil Brantley thrives in transition, using his speed and court vision to create fast-break opportunities or to drive to the basket. In the half-court, he is a capable ball-handler who can break down defenses with dribble penetration. In pick-and-roll situations, he skillfully uses his teammate’s screens to gain an advantage. He prefers to attack the basket but can also take a pull-up shot from mid-range, although his shot selection could improve (41.7% from 2-P on 9.1 attempts). His three-point shot is inconsistent (32.4% on 4.4 attempts last season), which can limit his versatility in terms of scoring. His ability to read defenses allows him to make timely passes, as evidenced by his assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.9 with the Explorers), which is valid for a handler who prefers to play at high pace. A good leader, vocal and energetic, he has also shown a good predisposition to take clutch shots in head-to-head games.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Khalill Brantley brings a high motor and tenacity on the defensive end. He applies consistent on-ball pressure and can disrupt passing lanes with quick hands (1.5 steals per match). His lateral quickness allows him to stay in front of most opposing guards, making him a solid perimeter defender. However, his lack of height and wingspan can make him vulnerable when defending taller or more physically imposing opponents, particularly in post-up situations. Reactivity and energy combined with the ability to withstand physical contact make him a contributor on the boards (5.3 last season) despite his size.
IMPROVED AREAS
Khalil Brantley, despite not having a great size, compensates with energy and speed but needs to develop a more consistent three-point shot to elevate his offensive versatility. Moreover, his leadership and game management abilities will improve with a more balanced shot selection. The aggressiveness he brings to the perimeter is certainly an aspect that many coaches appreciate. In his senior season with the Cowboys, he is competing at a higher collegiate level, which can immediately open doors to a mid-level European league. Potentially, he could become a significant impact player coming off the bench in major leagues.
