INTRODUCTION

Zed Key spent 4 seasons of his collegiate career at Ohio State University, where he consistently contributed as a key player for the Buckeyes. Before his season-ending shoulder injury in a contact with Zach Edey, he was averaging 10.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 55% from the field, which earned him an honorable mention for the Big Ten Conference 2023. Last season, he returned to the court with a role off the bench, leading to the decision to transfer to the Flyers for his final year where he has a starting role on Anthony Grant’s team.

PHYSICAL

Zed Key possesses a well-sculpted frame and, despite lacking a few centimeters in height, has a physique that allows him to battle in the paint. His strong upper body enables him to absorb contact, and he shows good dynamism even though he is not an elite leaper. His knowledge of the game, ability to position himself, and the energy he brings to the court compensate for his lack of vertical explosiveness. Key lateral quickness is average, but his strength is a defining asset in physical matchups, and he runs the floor well.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Zed Key is a solid finisher and low-post scorer, using a variety of drop steps, hooks, and good footwork moves to finish around the basket. He has shown efficiency in scoring with either hand, shooting over 55% from the field during multiple seasons. He has good timing in cutting to the basket and moving without the ball, and he can also set very effective screens that create an advantage for the handler as he rolls to the basket. Key excels at sealing defenders and using his body to create space in the paint, but he can face difficulties in traffic due to his handling and passing abilities. However, his offensive game is primarily limited to the paint. He has yet to develop consistent range beyond mid-range shots to enhance his face-up game. His three-point shooting is still inconsistent (10/36 in four years at Ohio State) but could make him versatile.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Zed Key, despite his size, has a strength that allows him to hold his ground against larger opponents in the post. He is an effective rebounder, particularly on the defensive glass, where he uses his body to box out and secure boards. His shot-blocking ability, while not elite, is respectable (0.6 in 15′ last season). His defensive awareness is commendable, as he is well-positioned to disrupt passing lanes and contest shots. He has a lot of energy and is a hustle player always ready for contact. However, his lack of lateral quickness makes him vulnerable when guarding quicker, more athletic forwards on the perimeter. His switchability in pick-and-roll situations can generate some issues in managing fouls.

IMPROVED AREAS

Zed Key needs to expand his offensive range and improve his consistency from the three-point shot to become more versatile. Additionally, a greater ability to read the game and handle the ball can ensure him a more central role. On the defensive end, his lateral quickness would allow him to be more effective in defending the pick-and-roll and switching onto smaller players. His physicality, as a high-energy big man who can provide rebounding and interior scoring, are potentially very interesting assets. He could have an immediate impact in a mid-level European league, with serious ambitions of playing in the major leagues within a couple of seasons.
