INTRODUCTION
Cameron Matthews is a forward player from Mississippi State. He has spent his entire college career (4 years) at MSU, taking on an increasingly important role each year. Matthews is an intense player who thrives on energy plays. On offense, he doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be effective. His key trait is that he contests every ball within his reach. He has good baseline movements and is a decent screener in pick-and-roll situations. However, there may be spacing issues since he doesn’t have a reliable three-point shot (8.7% from three on 0.7 attempts per game). His shots primarily come in the paint (shooting 68% from two-point range). What is surprising is his passing ability (2.9 assists per game) for a player with his characteristics and without excellent ball-handling skills; he has a great understanding with Tolu Smith. Sometimes, he even brings the ball up the court, like a point guard, to initiate the offense and set up Hubbard off the ball.
Clearly, he is also an excellent defender, both in one-on-one situations and within a team system, in addition to being a great stealer (2.1 per game).
Matthews is a decisive player who can do many things on a basketball court. He has clear strengths and limitations that can be mitigated in the right context.
