INTRODUCTION
B.J. Fitzgerald had been recruited by Norfolk State but after his freshman season, he chose to transfer to the Trojans, where he quickly became a key player. He was twice named to the Conference’s first team (2022 and 2023) and also received recognition as the most improved defender in the CIAA during his super-senior year.
PHYSICAL
B.J. Fitzgerald is a well-built swingman, perhaps lacking a bit in terms of physicality, but compensates with top-notch athleticism. Great leaping ability that comes in handy for rebounding and delivering highlights above the rim. Wingspan enough and fairly good lateral mobility that allows him to defend against any type of opponent.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
B.J. Fitzgerald’s main characteristic is undoubtedly his three-point shooting, which has steadily improved over the years, reaching 42% (on over 6 attempts per game) in the last college season. Excellent in catch and shoot situations, he can also take a shot off the dribble. He covers the lanes very well in open court and enjoys putting on a show. However, against set defenses, he tends to avoid driving into traffic as he is not inclined to absorb physical contact. He takes some liberties in passing the ball, and while the number of assists may be interesting (2.6 on average), it should be noted that his turnover ratio is zero, as he loses as many possessions as he gains. His great confidence in his athletic abilities can lead him to take some risks that result in avoidable offensive fouls.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
B.J. Fitzgerald’s combination of athleticism and mobility make him a potential elite defender capable of adapting and holding his own against any type of opponent. He has quick hands (1 steal on average) but struggles to choose the right moment for double teams and tends to commit a few too many fouls due to a lack of energy. He should ensure greater discipline and consistency in his own half to make a significant leap in his performance. A valuable asset on the boards (7.1 on average), he can also intimidate perimeter players driving to the hoop with his wingspan (0.6 blocks).
IMPROVED AREAS
B.J. Fitzgerald currently has a better percentage from beyond the arc than from the field, demonstrating that his selection of shots near the basket is not exemplary and he will need to make it more reliable. As well as his attention on the defensive end where he has great potential but sporadic mental presence. He can have an immediate impact in a medium-low level league, but he has qualities that could make him a potential 3&D player capable of performing on important stages in Europe.
