POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Demetre Roberts, after four seasons at St. Thomas Aquinas in Division II where he stood out, earning, after the award for best freshman, a spot in the All-ECC first team for the remaining three years crowned with the MVP title in 2022. With still one year of eligibility available, he transferred to the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, earning a place on the first team of the Northeastern Conference, but it was the legendary upset against Purdue and the showdown against FAU in the 2023 March Madness that brought him into the spotlight.
PHYSICAL
Demetre Roberts is a physically slight point guard who compensates for his lack of height and weight with great speed and good athleticism. He has good lateral mobility, quick hands, and excellent stamina (averaging over 34 minutes per game), making him a constant presence on the court at both ends. He struggles to absorb contact, which he tries to avoid with excellent body control and by utilizing his agility.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Demetre Roberts has great handling skills, adept at getting his teammates into rhythm (4.2 assists) and prefers to play at a fairly fast pace. Effective in moving without the ball when off the ball, but most of his baskets come from dribbling: isolations that he prefers to finish from mid-range or with a floater rather than at the rim due to his slight physical build. His shooting from beyond the arc has been inconsistent; in this case, he has better percentages when taking his own shot rather than off the catch. He tends to be a leader and is not afraid to take on responsibilities in crucial moments of games, showcasing clutch-player qualities.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Demetre Roberts’ full-court pressing implemented by the Knights partially masked the physical difficulties that lead opponents to attack him near the basket. Despite his quick hands (1.2 steals per game) and good timing for double teams, he suffers from a lack of height and is often an easy target that needs help from his teammates. He is quite reactive on long rebounds, converting them into lightning-fast transitions.
IMPROVED AREAS
The shooting from beyond the arc has shown a significant decline in the transition to Division (from 39.8% in four years at St. Thomas to 32.5% at FDU), and the percentages will be a crucial detail for his professional career. Physically and defensively, he may not be able to do much to become more impactful, but he possesses leadership and offensive skills that could allow him to establish himself in a mid-low European context with his electrifying style of play.
