INTRODUCTION

Antonio Daye was recruited by Florida International after three years – despite being the primary terminal of the Golden Panthers – he moved to Fordham where, due to an injury, he played only 14 games. After exploring the possibility of declaring for the NBA draft, he chose to finish his college career wearing the Coastal Carolina jersey, taking over the position of Rudi Williams.

PHYSICAL

Antonio Daye is a physical point guard with a powerful upper body that allows him to withstand contact. He combines good explosiveness with quick feet, enabling him to attack profitably in tight spaces, but he is not particularly fast; in fact, fast breaks and high-paced transitions are not his forte.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Antonio Daye is a primary handler who has varied his interpretation of the role over the years, going from the main offensive option to a floor general who tries to get his teammates into rhythm (4.6 assists this season) and, when necessary, rises to the occasion by taking on responsibilities. Equipped with a decisive first step, he manages to absorb contact with a certain ease while either driving to the basket or distributing winning passes to teammates stationed on the perimeter. However, his most noticeable weakness is his three-point shooting: the 27.1% over his five college years allows opposing defenses to give him a bit more space while simultaneously denying him the chance to attack the basket. This aggressive playing style in traffic costs him a few too many turnovers (2.6 this year, a clear improvement from 4.5 during his time at FIU). His leadership qualities make him a clutch player in close games.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Antonio Daye, when pressuring the opponent, uses a combination of mobility and physicality that can create significant difficulties for many counterparts who are less athletic. His quick hands and ability to read double-teaming timings allow him to maintain a good average in steals (1.7 over his college career). However, he is not very disciplined, and his desire to assert his presence away from the ball sometimes leads him to commit a few too many naive fouls.

IMPROVED AREAS

Antonio Daye, to secure a place in modern basketball, must certainly improve his shooting percentages from beyond the arc (as well as from the free-throw line) to avoid being too predictable for opposing defenses. His on-court leadership is undeniable, but at times a somewhat difficult character shines through, and there are hints of disputes even with teammates. He dreamed of the draft and the NBA, but realistically, he could become a solid rotational player on a mid-level team or put up significant numbers in a lower-tier European league.
