POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Jalen Moore, after two years at Olney Junior College, made the move to Oakland. A part of the starting five, he quickly took the reins of the roster led by the iconic coach Kempe (who has been sitting on the Golden Grizzlies’ bench since 1984). He was named to the Horizon League first team in 2021 and second team in 2022, consistently dominating the assists leaderboard, which he will win for the third consecutive year.
PHYSICAL
Jalen Moore possesses explosiveness and speed that allow him to be a factor in transition and fast-break situations. He has fairly quick hands and good lateral movements. His body is not very powerful; he leverages agility to avoid contact as much as possible, but he is not afraid of it. He may struggle due to his limited height – standing at 180cm – which could hinder his ascent to a good level in Europe.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Jalen Moore is a left-handed handler with a special knack for the winning pass (7.4 assists on average over five years), but he is not a refined possession manager, averaging 4 turnovers per game, a result of forced plays and flashes of creativity that are not well understood by his teammates. His lightning-quick first step allows him to attack the basket easily, but it also leads to a sometimes questionable shot selection. From beyond the arc, he struggles to find adequate consistency (28.5% this season, in line with his career percentages), although he has moments of brilliance that can sway games. With great leadership among his teammates, he never shies away from taking responsibility in game endings, albeit with mixed results.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Jalen Moore has over two steals per game, which confirms the quality of his timing for double-teams and passing lanes. It’s not uncommon to see him dive on the court in pursuit of the ball, and his willingness to help in his own half cannot be questioned. It is more challenging to implement good intentions from a physical standpoint, as he tends to struggle against players in similar roles, and in switches with more interior opponents, he can do little, resulting in his overall impact being quite inconsistent.
IMPROVED AREAS
If Jalen Moore can rein himself in by finding a greater balance in shot selection and giving due importance to each possession, he will be able to achieve considerable satisfaction in Europe. His three-point shot must ensure greater reliability to avoid putting too much strain on a physique that isn’t particularly sculpted by always attacking the rim. Overall, he has what it takes to be a leader for a mid-to-small-sized team, often needing the ball in hand and being accustomed to playing significant minutes.
