POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Jericole Hellems played four-year stint with the Wolfpack that brought few satisfactions and only two appearances in the NIT. A brief period with Promitheas in Greece, then he returned across the ocean after being selected with the 5th pick in the G-League draft, where he changed three franchises in just over two months.
PHYSICAL
Jericole Hellems is a swingman with an adequate physique but without the qualities of a super athlete. He is not too muscular and not extremely fast. This physique allows him to defend from “2 to 4” without suffering excessively. He has an adequate wingspan that is useful for intercepting passing lines or disrupting some shots.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Jericole Hellems’s main weapon in terms of scoring is undoubtedly his three-point shooting, which has seen constant improvement over the years, reaching a solid 39% on almost six attempts per game. Preferably shot in a spot-up situation, he can also act off screens if defended by a slower or more physical player, though it’s quite rare to see him create off the dribble. His physical stature allows him to explore post plays when the mismatch favors him, while he struggles with his first step due to questionable handling skills. He is definitely more impactful as a facilitator.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Jericole Hellems has a good propensity and can be utilized in multiple roles; he moves his feet quite well, but there are some concerns regarding lapses that turn into easy points for opponents. It is necessary to improve reading for rotations in order to avoid foul problems (last year an average of 3.7 with as many as 5 fouls leading to disqualification) and to be effective only against the direct opponent.
IMPROVED AREAS
The upside doesn’t seem unlimited, but with greater defensive discipline, a 3&D role could be achievable at a mid-level in the Europe. Certainly, being more involved in rebounding would be an additional skill that would be appreciated. On offense, adding a few options would be valuable to make him less one-dimensional and dependent on three-point shooting percentages.
