INTRODUCTION

Marvin McGhee III started his college career at South Georgia Technical College, where he earned Second Team All-American honors in 2022 at the JuCo level. He then transferred to Cal State Bakersfield, spending three seasons with the Roadrunners and ranking as the team’s second-leading scorer both as a junior and senior. For his graduate season, he moved to UTRGV, bringing experience and a proven scoring touch from the perimeter.

PHYSICAL

Marvin McGhee has a strong, compact frame and solid athleticism, enabling him to guard multiple spots on the perimeter. His build gives him good balance and stability in contact, while his coordination helps him create separation in one-on-one situations. He’s more quick-reactive than explosive, jumps well but isn’t a high-level vertical athlete. That limits his ability to finish through traffic and absorb contact at the rim. Improving his lateral agility and overall defensive energy would make his physical tools more functional across the full game.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Marvin McGhee is primarily a catch-and-shoot threat who spaces the floor effectively. Over his three years at Bakersfield, he shot 35.4% from three on 5.3 attempts per game, showing consistency and rhythm. He moves well off the ball, uses screens properly, and reads defenders to find open looks. When attacking off the dribble, he can create space for midrange pull-ups, though his release could be faster to adjust against tight contests. Ball-handling is serviceable, but his decision-making under pressure remains an issue, he averaged just 1 assist per game and can be turnover-prone (1.2 per match). His slashing game is limited: he rarely attacks the rim and generates few free throws, relying almost entirely on jump shooting to produce points.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Physically equipped to defend guards and wings, McGhee has the frame and footwork to be a solid on-ball defender. He handles closeouts well and contests effectively, but tends to lack intensity and reactivity, especially laterally. Opposing guards can beat him off the dribble when he relaxes his stance. His defensive rebounding (3.7 per game) is notable for a wing, thanks to good positioning and physicality. Greater anticipation in passing lanes and more consistent effort could elevate his defensive profile, potentially making him a switchable, energy-driven piece in team systems.

IMPROVED AREAS

Marvin McGhee must raise his defensive engagement and develop a more aggressive mindset to impact the game consistently. Improving his ability to read plays and involve teammates offensively would also increase his value. Becoming less perimeter-dependent, attacking the rim more decisively and finishing through contact, should be a priority. If he can combine his shooting with better intensity and versatility, he projects as a potential 3&D contributor at the mid-to-low European professional level.
