POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
William Kyle developed into a multi-level frontcourt piece during a collegiate path that ran through South Dakota State, UCLA, and now Syracuse. He broke out at SDSU in his sophomore season, where he won the Conference, earning the title of MVP of the Summit League Tournament, effectively stealing it from teammate Zeke Mayo. In that season, he earned Summit League Defensive Player of the Year and First Team honors before transferring to UCLA. With the Bruins, his role was reduced; he found playing time in the early games but then remained a 10-minute-per-game backup. Syracuse added him as a transfer for his senior year, giving him a new opportunity at a high-major.
PHYSICAL
William Kyle is a long, athletic big man with an impressive wingspan who projects as a modern interior defender. Explosive and able to play above the rim, he has the length to alter shots and enough mobility to rotate and help in drop or switch elements of a defense. He runs the floor well; his coordination and reactivity are strengths. However, adding functional strength would help him hold position against heavier opponents and finish through contact more consistently. While he has decent footwork, his lateral mobility could benefit from increased quickness.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
William Kyle is an efficient finisher and roll-man. In his career, he has 60% from 2-P on 5.9 attempts due to his reliability around the rim. His SDSU tape shows a player who can knock down short hooks, convert on putbacks (2.2 per game as a sophomore), and execute simple post reads. His dynamism allows him to set solid screens on the perimeter and roll to the basket, he’s a reliable lob target and space eater in half-court sets. While his off-the-ball movements seem to be improving, his handle and face-up creation are limited. He’s not a consistent jump shooter, as evidenced by his free throws: 39.5% at UCLA. He has shown some good reads from the post during his time at SDSU (1.7 assists per game) but struggles to create off the dribble. Expanding his touch around the rim and improving his hand/finish under contact would increase his offensive footprint.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
William Kyle has a high-potential defensive profile. Being named Summit League Defensive Player of the Year speaks to his timing, rim deterrence, and impact on team defense. He averaged 1.6 blocks per game at SDSU and showed decent rebounding instincts (6.6 in 28 minutes on the court) while protecting the paint and deterring interior drives. His length allows him to guard multiple frontcourt actions and contribute to drop coverage and weak-side help. That said, his lateral quickness is average; in switch-heavy or perimeter-driven schemes, he may need schematic cover (double-teams, hedges, or limiting switch matchups) to avoid being pulled into uncomfortable spaces. Overall, he is quite disciplined, not seeking aggressive steals on passing lanes, and given his size and defensive energy, he seems capable of controlling contact and managing fouls.
IMPROVED AREAS
William Kyle must continue to add functional strength to better handle physical contact and finish through traffic. Improving touch from the line and developing a reliable short jumper would make him less predictable offensively and expand his scoring range beyond pure rim finishing. On defense, enhancing lateral mobility and quick recovery steps will help him fit into more switch-heavy schemes. He should also work on sustaining energy and focus when defending away from the ball. With his length, timing, and mobility, Kyle projects as a valuable rotational big who can anchor a defense and contribute efficiently as a finisher at the professional level.
