POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Romelle Mansel split his collegiate basketball career between Long Beach State and the Tigers. During his three years in California, he found a role as a bench player. After transferring, he received more playing time, becoming part of the starting five in his junior season. An injury sidelined him the following year, during which his teammate Jordan O’Neal emerged. He has become a key contributor, particularly in the 2024–25 season, where he helped Jackson State reach the conference finals, which they had missed for 10 years. His standout performances include being named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Impact Player of the Week in January 2025 and participating in the season-ending HBCU All-Star Game.
PHYSICAL
Romelle Mansel possesses a solid frame suitable for a versatile player who can interpret the role in various ways. His size allows him to be effective in the paint, he has a good wingspan and is dynamic. While not exceptionally strong, he has good elevation and can play above the rim. He demonstrates good mobility and endurance, making him the player with the most minutes per game for the Tigers (32.5 per match). Additionally, he has good lateral mobility, but there is room for improvement in terms of reactivity. However, he can increase his muscle mass to better absorb contact and set more solid screens.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Romelle Mansel is a versatile offensive player who contributes in multiple facets of the game. His ability to move off the ball allows him to be effective in cuts, exhibiting good timing as a roller to the basket while having room to set stronger screens and generate more advantage. While he has low post movements that can be utilized to score around the basket, he can encounter difficulties in creating his own shot. On the perimeter, he has shown the ability to facilitate offense, averaging 2.6 assists per game, indicating his capability to find open teammates and make smart passes, as well as being involved in short-rolls. While his three-point shooting is limited (20% for his career on 0.5 attempts), he can occasionally stretch the floor. Improving his outside shooting would make him a more complete offensive threat. Overall, he is a versatile player; he is not a natural scorer but a player who can do multiple things and be integrated into various offensive systems.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Romelle Mansel is a solid presence in the paint. His mobility makes him effective as a help defender and as a rim protector (0.9 blocks per game). Active on the boards, he was the best rebounder for the Tigers this season and ranked fifth in the Conference (6.9 average). A significant portion of his game comes on the defensive end; his ability to read the game allows him to position himself effectively. While he is disciplined and does not take too many anticipations, this can make him passive in static situations where he allows a big man to receive the ball in the post and struggles to limit him physically. However, enhancing his lateral movement would improve his perimeter defense, allowing him to guard a wider range of opponents effectively, but even now, he is capable of managing switches on the perimeter without getting into major foul trouble.
IMPROVED AREAS
Romelle Mansel should focus on expanding his offensive skill set, particularly by developing a consistent mid-range and three-point shot to stretch defenses. Improving his ability to create his own shot could make him a bigger offensive threat. Increasing his physical strength will aid in absorbing contact and setting more impactful screens. Additionally, refining his lateral quickness and reactivity will improve his perimeter defense. Addressing these areas will make him a more versatile and valuable asset at the professional level. In his rookie season, he can have an impact in a medium-low level league. Overall, he has the potential to be a glue guy on bigger stages in a couple of years.
