INTRODUCTION

Myles Tate began his college basketball career at Butler, where he made an immediate impact as a freshman. Starting 18 games and showing promise as a quick, high-IQ point guard. After battling injuries and seeing a reduced role, he transferred to the Mountaineers where he found a more consistent spot in the rotation. In the 2023–24 season, he played a key role in App State’s run to the Sun Belt regular-season title. In the last season, he became, alongside C.J. Huntley, the key player becoming the best assistman, the second-best stealer, and the fourth scorer in the Conference, earning a nomination to the Sun Belt First-Team.

PHYSICAL

Myles Tate doesn’t have a large build but possesses a lean frame and good agility. While he doesn’t have elite strength to absorb contact, his quickness and low center of gravity help him stay balanced and shifty on the court. He isn’t the most explosive athlete, especially post-injury, but he compensates with excellent body control and footwork. Adding muscle and improving his ability to absorb contact could help him make the transition to the pro level more smoothly, particularly against more physical opponents. He has good reactivity and lateral mobility that allow him to be ready for fifty-fifty balls and recover possession.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Myles Tate is a classic lead guard who excels at initiating offense and keeping the ball moving and resolving broken plays. While his jumper off the catch is smooth, he struggles to create separation off the dribble for his shot. In the last season, he significantly improved his consistency from three-point range (34.4% on 5.8 attempts, never in his career had he been over 28.9%) and this allows him to be a complete threat. He needs to show more composed shot selection (38.6% from the field throughout his NCAA career), as he rarely gets all the way to the rim and tends to avoid contact. Additionally, he improved his decision-making, averaging 5.2 assists per game. As a passer, he reads the game well and can deliver in pick-and-roll scenarios, though he sometimes plays too cautiously. His assist-to-turnover ratio (+2.0 last season) shows reliability, but he’s not a high-risk/high-reward creator. Overall, the increased space and confidence gained in the last season may have allowed him to take a step forward towards professional basketball.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Myles Tate is capable of applying strong pressure on the perimeter, and his game is built around anticipation and effort. He’s a pesky on-ball defender with quick feet and good hands, often pestering opposing guards into bad passes (1.9 steals per game). His size limits his switchability and ability to defend bigger guards, but within his role, he is dependable. While his awareness does not always translate into playing with discipline, he tends to overcommit on passing lanes, leaving some easy opportunities for opponents. His reactivity and quickness make him an elite rebounder for his size (5.1 per game) who can turn them into fast breaks.

IMPROVED AREAS

Myles Tate needs to continue developing his ability to create separation off the dribble and finish through contact. His shot selection remains an area of concern, and becoming more efficient around the rim will be crucial for expanding his offensive versatility. Defensively, refining his discipline and timing on gambles can prevent easy breakdowns in team coverage. With improved physical strength and a more consistent approach to reading the game, he could become a reliable two-way floor general in European leagues, particularly in up-tempo or pressing systems. For his rookie season, he could be an ideal target for a mid to low-level European team.
