INTRODUCTION

Mitchell Saxen has been a pivotal player for the Saint Mary’s Gaels throughout his collegiate career. He started every game for three consecutive seasons, playing in 103 matches, demonstrating his durability and importance to the team. Over 1300 points in his career and three seasons in double figures are not insignificant for a squad that has boasted one of the top 10 defenses in the entire NCAA for years. He won a Conference title (2024), was named Defensive Player of the Year twice (2024 and 2025), and received three First-Team All-WCC nominations (2023, 2024, 2025). He finished his journey with the Gaels with a win record of 74.4% over five seasons.

PHYSICAL

Mitchell Saxen possesses the prototypical size for a center, providing him with a significant presence in the paint. His solid frame allows him to hold his ground against opposing big men and effectively absorb contact near the basket. While not the most explosive athlete, Saxen’s mobility is commendable for his position. His physical attributes contribute to his effectiveness in both offensive and defensive situations, particularly in rebounding and shot-blocking. However, to enhance his performance at the professional level, further developing his lateral quickness and agility would be beneficial. Overall, he is not an elite athlete but compensates with a good understanding of the game and a strong, solid body.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Mitchell Saxen is a reliable finisher; throughout his career, he has made 54.9% from the field on 6.4 attempts per game. He prefers to play in the low post, utilizing his size and footwork to create scoring opportunities, is able to create space for himself off the dribble, and has the strength to absorb contact. His ability to finish around the rim makes him a consistent threat in the paint. While primarily a low-post player, Saxen has shown capability in moving effectively off the ball with cuts and as a roller, even though he lacks the explosiveness to always attack the rim, which adds versatility to his offensive game. However, his offensive range is somewhat limited, as he does not frequently attempt shots from beyond the paint. Developing a reliable mid-range or outside shot could significantly enhance his offensive repertoire and spacing on the floor. His good understanding of the game at the Gaels has led to glimpses of facilitator skills (1.7 assists on average), but the difficulties in playing a face-up game can make it easier for defenses to read his decisions.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Mitchell Saxen is a formidable presence in the paint, leading the WCC in rebounds and ranking third in blocks. His shot-blocking ability deters opponents from attacking the rim (1.3 per game), and his understanding of defensive positioning allows him to contest shots effectively without excessive fouling. While his interior defense is a significant asset, enhancing his lateral mobility would improve his effectiveness in defending pick-and-roll situations and switching onto smaller, quicker players. His ability to protect the paint can leave open shots on the perimeter, but overall, the two DPOYs on one of the best defenses in the NCAA confirm his high-level skills and aptitude on his side of the court.

IMPROVED AREAS

Mitchell Saxen must expand his offensive versatility by developing a reliable mid-range shot. His current scoring profile is heavily reliant on the low post, making it easier for defenses to collapse on him. Improving his face-up game would allow him to operate more effectively outside the paint and take advantage of mismatches. Defensively, while his rim protection is elite, improving his lateral mobility will be key to handling pick-and-roll situations and switches against quicker players. Additionally, refining his athleticism could help him make a greater impact on both sides of the court. If he can address these areas, Saxen has the potential to carve out a role as a high-IQ, defensively sound big man at the next level. In his rookie season, he could find a role in a secondary level team in a major European league or as a star in a mid-level league.
