POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Devontae Blanton has been a cornerstone for the Eastern Kentucky Colonels since his freshman year. He became part of the starting five during his sophomore season, scoring over 2000 points, grabbing more than 800 rebounds, and making over 400 assists. In 2023, he earned the ASUN First Team Tournament honors, and his contributions were pivotal in EKU’s deep run in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI), culminating in a career-high 32-point game against Indiana State. His consistent performance elevated him to the Third Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors in 2024, when he, along with Isaiah Cozart and Michael Moreno, won the ASUN regular season.
PHYSICAL
Devontae Blanton has a solid and well-sculpted upper body. Although not exceptionally explosive, his strength and coordination make him a versatile profile for a forward. His physicality allows him to compete effectively and absorb contact, while his dynamism enables him to move off the ball and in rotations during defensive phases, making him a reliable presence on both ends of the court. He is not very vertical but compensates with a good understanding of the game and positional awareness. Overall, he is a solid athlete who can fulfill multiple roles based on tactical needs.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Devontae Blanton is a system player, versatile and capable of being a scorer as well as a facilitator. He excels in driving to the basket, utilizing his strength to create space for a pull-up. He doesn’t have the explosiveness to get to the rim, but his mid-range game is reliable, although he tends to struggle going left, his weak hand. When defended by a less strong opponent, he finds space in the post where he uses good footwork and agility. He moves well off the ball, but his three-point shot is inconsistent (27.6% on 1.9 attempts). This limits his impact on the perimeter, but as a facilitator, he demonstrates his ability to create opportunities for teammates and makes good reads (4.6 assists per game in his graduate year). His dynamism and good positioning make him a presence on the boards (2.1 per game), securing second-chance points. However, the lack of shooting consistency causes him to rely on his ball-handling skills more than needed, generating turnovers (2.3 per game) and indicating room for improvement.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Devontae Blanton’s versatility is a significant asset. He effectively guards multiple positions, thanks to his lateral quickness and strength. He is employed to guard the strongest opponents on the ball, showing a good sense of positioning in rotations. Useful for rebounds despite not having great verticality (6.2 per game), contributing to his team’s transition opportunities. While his aggressiveness on passing lanes and anticipatory skills are not among his main strengths, his overall defensive awareness compensates for this.
IMPROVED AREAS
Devontae Blanton should focus on improving his three-point shot to become a complete offensive threat. His passing skills are remarkable; improving his ball handling and possession management to limit turnovers will be crucial for a step up. While he may not be a vertical player, working on his athleticism and explosiveness can give him a total physical presence. Overall, he is a player to be placed in a system where he can enhance his facilitator skills and, when necessary, drive to the basket. In his rookie season, a mid-level European league can be the right environment to start a solid professional career.
