INTRODUCTION

Mason Walters had a standout collegiate career at the University of Jamestown (ND), where he earned multiple accolades. He was named to the First Team All-America NAIA three times and was awarded Player of the Year in 2023 over Riley Minix. For his graduate season, he transferred to the Cowboys, where he was part of the starting five and one of the most utilized players by Coach Linder.

PHYSICAL

Mason Walters possesses a solid frame; he combines size with deceptive agility, allowing him to be effective in transition and in the paint. His mobility enables him to exploit mismatches against smaller defenders, though he may lack elite vertical explosiveness. His physical endurance has allowed him to consistently play many minutes (31.7 in his four NAIA years, 32.8 during his season with the Cowboys) without noticeable drop-offs in energy. He is not an explosive athlete, and his lateral mobility needs more quickness.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Mason Walters is a highly efficient scorer in the low post, utilizing a combination of footwork, strength, and soft touch around the rim. He is able to use his size in mismatch situations and his agility against stronger big men. From this position, he can also find his teammates’ cuts or pass the ball for an open shot (2 assists per game). However, his handle could improve under pressure from quicker defenders when facing doubling, limiting turnovers (2.3 last season). In pick and roll situations, he lacks the athleticism to drive to the basket but compensates with a reliable mid-range jumper, and he can stretch the floor with three-point shooting (36.4% on 2.2 attempts in NAIA, only 18.2% on 2 attempts at Wyoming). Overall, he brings a good basketball IQ and a knack for creating scoring opportunities both for himself and his teammates. Especially when he receives the ball in the post.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Mason Walters is a solid post defender who uses his strength and positioning to contest the opponent in static situations. He has a good sense of position, but his limited athleticism makes him an average rebounder (5.4 on average with the Cowboys) and a limited rim protector. He tends to follow the movement of the ball more than that of his direct opponent, which can lead to backdoor cuts or lapses in concentration. However, he may struggle to guard quicker, more athletic forwards on the perimeter, highlighting an area where improved lateral quickness would benefit him. His effort and commitment to defensive fundamentals remain strong, which helps compensate for any physical limitations.

IMPROVED AREAS

Mason Walters is a well-rounded player; refining his perimeter defense and developing a quicker release on his outside shot would enhance his consistency in three-point shooting. Improving his lateral speed and ball-handling under pressure could also boost his versatility. Walters projects as a stretch-four or a small-ball five at the professional level, particularly valuable in systems that prioritize spacing and ball movement. Overall, starting from a mid-to-low level European league could be ideal for his future growth.
