POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Sy Chatman was recruited by UMass, where he showcased great athletic abilities for two years after coming off the bench. He transferred to Illinois State during the pandemic, and in his junior year, he secured a spot in the starting five, greatly improving his personal statistics. However, a knee injury ended his season. Joining the Bulls after a redshirt season, he became the offensive leader and, with an average of 32.6 minutes per game, confirmed that he had fully recovered.
PHYSICAL
Sy Chatman is a player with physicality and great athletic abilities, dynamic and agile but with a strong upper body that allows him to absorb contact. He has good explosiveness that allows him to go above the rim and with decent timing. Valid footwork and lateral mobility but has room to improve in reactivity and positioning.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Sy Chatman is a versatile player with good offensive abilities, excelling at driving to the rim with a combination of physical strength and agility. He also has a strong post game, using his body and footwork to create space for a comfortable lay-up (54.6% from 2-point range last season). With the Bulls, he has started to expand his shooting range to develop a more effective perimeter game. Although he needs to work on it (25.7% on 4.6 attempts), it already provides him with more space to attack the opponent off the dribble. He needs to improve his ball handling, passing skills, and limit his initiatives off the dribble (2.7 turnovers), often taken at moments out of rhythm or by forcing the play.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Sy Chatman has all the necessary tools to be a valid defender against multiple types of opponents. He has good lateral mobility, athleticism, and physicality that allows him to hold his position even against stronger players. He is a good rim-protector (1.6 blocks per match) and has a decent presence on the boards (6.4), but he suffers from too many concentration lapses that make him less effective. In rotations, he doesn’t read switches well and relies too much on his athletic abilities to compensate.
IMPROVED AREAS
Sy Chatman has great potential that injuries and inconsistency have limited, but he is a versatile player and can have a good upside. He needs to make his three-point shot reliable and manage possessions better to become a weapon on the offensive end. On the defensive end, a greater focus and attention could make him a valuable player. Starting from a medium-low level league to see the impact and room for growth, he has the possibility of reaching high levels in Europe.
