INTRODUCTION

Austin Crowley, after three seasons spent coming off the bench at Ole Miss, moved to the Golden Eagles where he took a place in the starting five and became the offensive leader of a roster that also included Felipe Haase and DeAndre Pinckney. He was selected to the best team of the 2023 Sun Belt after leading the team to a regular-season victory, but then faced immediate losses in both the Conference tournament and the NIT.

PHYSICAL

Austin Crowley is an athletic swingman with a good wingspan and quick foot movements, a combination that makes him a player with the tools to be very versatile in every situation. He is not very physical and can struggle with contact. He certainly needs to work on better sculpting his body, which is currently too slim. Reactive and explosive, in the open floor he is very fast and almost impossible to limit, and he has great lateral mobility.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Austin Crowley is an all-around player capable of covering every role in the backcourt. He’s a good ball-handler who can take shots with great elegance off the dribble with ease. However, it is his off-ball movements that make him difficult to limit, especially during cuts near the basket where he can utilize his athleticism. When defended by a smaller opponent, he can also exploit the low post game. Overall, he is a very versatile scorer, having worked extensively on his shot beyond the three-point arc to the point of making it one of his strong points (35.9% last season on 5.9 attempts per game). He is able to find his teammates with good continuity (2.6 assists per match), but he must learn to manage possessions better to play more minutes as a handler, as he is turnover prone (2.4 last season).

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Austin Crowley has a combination of wingspan, reactivity, and quick hands that make him a danger on the passing lines where he is able to steal (1.9 per match), but he must discipline himself to not get beaten with simple back doors. Able to defend against multiple types of opponents, he may find it difficult against physically stronger players who attack the rim. With the athletic skills at his disposal, he could be more useful in rebounding (4.1 per game) and then lead the fast breaks himself. Overall, he has the tools to be a reliable presence in the defensive phase, but at the moment he still has too many mental missed passes.

IMPROVED AREAS

Austin Crowley must sculpt his body better to be able to manage physical contacts and make a leap forward in terms of possession management and defensive discipline. An increase in concentration could elevate him to a high-profile player in the European context. Thanks to his natural talent and elegance of movement that make him difficult to defend.
