POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Jayveous McKinnis played four years at Jackson State where he proved to be dominant. Two seasons averaging a double-double (very close to a third) and a series of SWAC awards: three-time Defensive Player of the Year, two-time All-Conference team selection, and the 2022 MVP of the Conference. For his super-senior year, he transferred to Ole Miss where, coming off the bench, he showed his ability to impact and be useful even in limited minutes.
PHYSICAL
Jayveous McKinnis is equipped with significant explosiveness that allows him to always be competitive near the rim. Good athleticism combined with a certain mobility makes him a troublesome opponent to limit in spaces. Not too physical, strengths battles can see him succumb especially against players of superior size and strongest and constitute a large majority. Fast enough to outrun direct rivals and cover the lanes well in transition.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Jayveous McKinnis is a solid finisher as demonstrated by his 60.6% shooting from the field during his collegiate career. His preferred solution is the dunk, whether it’s after a cut from the baseline or in an alley-oop, and put-backs are also a constant – at Jackson State he always averaged over 3 offensive rebounds per game – in his limited offensive arsenal. Decent as a roller, he has the means to be more effective but ends up hiding or mistiming his cuts. He makes good moves from the post, where he exploits mismatches with a hook shot on approach and decent footwork. The mid-range shot is not consistent, but he can find it when he gets into rhythm and confidence; his career free-throw percentages (52.9% over the five-year period) certify a not-too-polished shooting hand. Three-point shooting is not in his skill set.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Jayveous McKinnis is a player with great energy and a warrior spirit, making him formidable in protecting his basket. With important intimidation skills (0.9 blocks in his last season, but 2.9 per game at the Tigers), he is always ready to help out on the perimeter, although he can sometimes get carried away and commit avoidable fouls. A good switch defender, his combination of athleticism and mobility allows him to thwart opponents’ attacks on the rim. He struggles more when he has to work physically in static situations against a big man who has the advantage in height and weight, but his ability to anticipate or dive for loose balls is a characteristic that may not always be useful but is usually appreciated by coaches.
IMPROVED AREAS
Jayveous McKinnis expanding his offensive options would be crucial, with a reliable mid-range shot and a greater ability to find the right spaces when rolling to the basket. He is a player who thrives on his athleticism and enthusiasm, but learning to make reads beyond just hand-offs would give him greater versatility. His energy could immediately pay off in Northern European leagues, where the game is typically played at a faster pace, making his contribution immediately tangible.
