INTRODUCTION
Kenny Dye is set to conclude his five-year experience with the Royals by playing this final season in the Atlantic Sun Conference after having experienced promotion -collecting awards and accolades- from Division II. Last season, he earned the title of MVP of the SAC, of which he was also a member of the ideal five for two years, a true institution for the university with which he surpassed 1,000 points and 500 assists.
PHYSICAL
Kenny Dye is not very tall but quite compact; contact doesn’t scare him, and his foot speed combined with lateral mobility helps him considerably on defense. He is not particularly fast or explosive, but rather reactive and good at anticipating game situations.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Kenny Dye executes quick and clean shots, not shying away from driving to the basket – despite not having a lightning-quick first step – finishing with delicate and elegant floaters, but his true skill lies in controlling the pace of the game; his possession management is quite accurate (assist/turnover ratio of +2.8) and shot selection is rewarded by his shooting percentages. As a true floor general, he tends to take on responsibility in intense game endings, demonstrating time and again that he has the temperament of a clutch player capable of making winning decisions, while, oddly enough, he tends to have a few too many empty free-throw attempts even in tight point-to-point finishes.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Kenny Dye is an excellent defender on the ball, capable of applying strong pressure on the ball carrier and effectively handling 1-on-1 situations, directing the opponent towards help from teammates. Quite disciplined, he doesn’t act much on passing lanes and gets dragged into switches too easily, and his physique doesn’t provide him with many tools to oppose taller players, leading him to commit a significant number of fouls (2.7 this season in DI) to stop them.
IMPROVED AREAS
Kenny Dye’s natural talent doesn’t seem extraordinary, and thus his upside appears limited. However, with further growth in terms of experience, he can certainly carve out a niche at the medium/high European level. In terms of gameplay, he needs to provide greater guarantees at the free-throw line (65% in the current season) and become more astute defensively given his limited physicality.
