INTRODUCTION

Owen Koonce briefly walked on at Colorado during the pandemic year before transferring to Colorado Mesa. During his years in D-2, he earned playing time, becoming part of the starting five as a junior with a breakout season. Earning All-RMAC Second Team and RMAC All-Tournament team honors and nearly achieving a DII 50-40-90 shooting season, he led the team to the Regional Finals in the NCAA Tournament. After transferring to the Mustangs for his senior year, he started all games, led the team in scoring and rebounds, and earned All-Big West Honor Mention. With the help of Jarred Hyder, they reached the semifinals in the Conference tournament.

PHYSICAL

Owen Koonce has a solid forward build with good athleticism. While he has good elevation, he can improve in terms of speed and explosiveness in 1v1 situations. His frame supports contact and finishing, though he might be overpowered by stronger opponents at the next level if he doesn’t add muscle mass. He lacks elite length to play power forward for long stretches but compensates with timing and physical effort. However, to play as a small forward, enhancing his lateral quickness is crucial for defensive phases. Overall, he is a player with good athletic predisposition but significant room for growth.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Owen Koonce is an efficient three-level scorer. He excels in catch-and-shoot from beyond the arc (40.4% on 4.9 attempts) but can attack the close-out and go to the rim. He can explore the mid-range with a pull-up and overall has a high-level shot selection (59.3% from 2-P on 7.1 attempts). He can also score off dribble drives using his teammates’ screens to gain an advantage, going inside confidently but needs to improve his handling to limit turnovers (2.6 per game). His dynamism makes him a rebounder (1.4 per game) and shows off-ball instincts and hustle. Additionally, he has also displayed some facilitation skills from the perimeter, rewarding teammates’ cuts to the basket (1.8 assists on average). Overall, he lacks isolation creation as a ball handler but has reliable offense with movement, catch-and-shoot, and spot-up roles, ideal for a system scorer.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Owen Koonce shows good anticipation and help-side awareness, proving reliable in defensive rotations. His good sense of positioning leads him to average 1.1 steals and 0.5 blocks. Meanwhile, his lateral quickness helps him navigate off-ball movement, though he may struggle against stronger or quicker forwards. He uses effort to compensate for a lack of natural length. A decent rebounder (4.8 per match) on the defensive glass, he has a good understanding of the game, but needs to improve strength and physicality to avoid getting overpowered. Overall, he can guard multiple positions but may struggle against stronger and more muscular opponents.

IMPROVED AREAS

Owen Koonce must improve his lateral quickness to consistently defend forwards and avoid being caught in mismatch situations. Strength development is essential to withstand physical contact and avoid being overpowered at the next level. Tightening his handle and cutting down on turnovers will unlock more on-ball opportunities. While his shooting and IQ are translatable, elevating his athletic tools and physicality is key to staying on the floor in pro-level systems. His best fit lies in motion offenses or structured systems where his spot-up game, off-ball reads, and decision-making can thrive. He can immediately guarantee an impact in a mid-low level league with the potential to become a good rotation player on bigger stages in a couple of seasons.
