POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Kendall Munson was recruited by Pepperdine, where he stayed for two seasons before moving to Portland State. In his senior year with the Vikings, he began to get significant playing time and a spot in the starting five. For his graduate season, he moved to the Dolphins, where he is setting career highs in nearly all statistics.
PHYSICAL
Kendall Munson has a good combination of physicality and mobility that allows him to be effective in the paint. He has a well-defined upper body that enables him to absorb contact. However, he needs to improve his coordination and is not particularly explosive. He is reactive and fairly dynamic for his size, and he is not afraid to sacrifice himself as a fighter. Clearly, he is not an elite athlete, but he possesses the physical tools to have a solid career in the professional ranks.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Kendall Munson is an inside player with good finishing abilities, consistently shooting over 51% from the field in recent seasons, capable of creating space from the post. He doesn’t have many moves but is fairly reliable (52% on 6.3 attempts) and provides a solid presence on the boards that can be converted into easy lay-ups (2 offensive rebounds per game). With his dynamism, he is effective in cuts from the weak side and can attempt to play 1v1 if defended by a slower opponent. His mid-range jumper is slow and mechanic, but he is working on it, as evidenced by his improvement in free throw percentages. On the perimeter, he can set fairly solid screens, but he lacks the athleticism and verticality to be a lob threat above the rim. He needs to limit his ball-handling initiatives (1.6 turnovers), especially from the post, where he has shown a decent ability to find teammates both on the perimeter and in cuts to the basket. Overall, he is not a primary scorer but a solid player with plenty of room for growth to become versatile in terms of scoring.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Kendall Munson is a solid defender near the basket, with good positioning sense and a strong combination of strength to challenge big men, as well as mobility to cover his teammates. Reactive and present on rebounds (5.1 in 21 minutes on the court), he lacks the verticality to intimidate as a rim protector (0.4 per game). In pick-and-roll situations, he can switch but needs to improve his foot positioning and angle reading; his lateral mobility is decent for his size. He relies too much on his hands to stop opponents in 1v1 situations, which can lead to some issues with foul management (2.4 in 20 minutes last season). Overall, he is a good fighter with a solid defensive awareness.
IMPROVED AREAS
Kendall Munson is a solid player, not overly talented but with significant room for growth. Improving his shooting range and becoming more complete and versatile offensively is definitely a priority. He doesn’t possess great athleticism or verticality, but physically he is certainly adequate in terms of toughness and mobility. He needs to work on his footwork and manage his energy better to avoid unnecessary fouls. Overall, he can have a good immediate impact in a lower to mid-level European league, and his development in the early seasons will be crucial to understanding his ceiling.
