ACTUAL
POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Obi Agbim is a point guard from Wyoming, currently in his first season at the Division I level. Prior to this, he spent three years in Division II and one year at a Junior College. During his freshman year, he played at Metro State (appearing in just 9 games), then transferred to Northeastern JC, where he averaged 16.8 points per game, and finally spent two years at Fort Lewis. In his final season at Fort Lewis, Agbim averaged 15.5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game, earning First Team All-South Central Region and First Team All-RMAC honors, as well as being named the RMAC Tournament MVP.
PHYSICAL
Agbim has an average build, relatively lean, but possesses excellent speed and explosive legs that allow for spectacular plays. He has the ideal attributes to be a scoring guard, but his 82 kg (181 lbs) frame may limit him in this role.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Due to his physical profile, Agbim is positioned as a point guard, but his mindset is that of a pure scorer. He is most effective when he has the ball in his hands, capable of scoring in a variety of ways, including from beyond the arc. Last season, he shot 35.5% from three (and an impressive 47.8% so far at Wyoming), though he doesn’t overuse this option (4.6 attempts per game at Fort Lewis). Agbim thrives in transition, often finishing above the rim despite his 191 cm (6’3”) height. His standout offensive weapon is his hesitation move and crossover dribble, which frequently throws defenders off balance, allowing him to drive to the rim. However, he can sometimes struggle with ball handling, committing occasional unforced turnovers. While not an elite passer or assistman, he has decent game control and keeps a steady rhythm, as evidenced by his low turnover rate (1.8 turnovers per game last year), an impressive stat for his playing style.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Although defense may seem less suited to Agbim’s physique and style, he is a gritty and committed defender who reads the game well and applies himself diligently. At times, his intensity leads to excessive fouling as he tries to make an impact. His speed and quick footwork make him highly effective as an on-ball defender and in guarding the pick-and-roll.
IMPROVED AREAS
Obi Agbim is testing himself at the demanding Division I level, which will challenge him and refine his game. He has all the tools and potential to succeed in professional basketball.
