POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
J.T. Shumate began his collegiate career at the D-II level with Walsh, where he immediately produced strong numbers and earned a place on the 2019 GMAC First Team. He then transferred to Toledo, where he spent three seasons consistently competing at the top of the MAC, winning three consecutive regular season titles, although without securing a conference tournament title or an NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2023, he was selected to the All-MAC First Team and was also recognized twice as an Academic All-American First Team member, highlighting both his on-court impact and academic consistency.
PHYSICAL
J.T. Shumate has adequate size for his role, paired with sufficient athleticism but limited foot speed. He shows strong timing in help defense and an excellent sense of positioning, which helps compensate for average energy and reactivity levels. He uses his body effectively in contact situations and to create space for his shot. Shumate also benefits from a solid wingspan, although his lateral mobility remains a limitation, especially when defending in space.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
J.T. Shumate is highly effective in floor spacing thanks to his 3-P shooting, establishing himself as a true sharpshooter with 43.7% from beyond the arc over three seasons at Toledo on four attempts per game. He also shows decent passing instincts (1.4 assists per game), indicating some facilitator potential. He lacks explosiveness in his first step and struggles to consistently create shots off the dribble. While he moves well without the ball, he does not have the speed to be a vertical threat as a roller. Around the basket, he prefers to operate in the low post when matched against smaller defenders, using simple but effective footwork and body positioning to finish efficiently. He takes care of the ball well (0.8 turnovers per game) and plays with a high basketball IQ, although without the athletic profile to dominate offensively.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
J.T. Shumate provides a solid presence as a rim protector, averaging 1.2 blocks per game, supported by strong defensive reads and well-timed help rotations. He can handle physical contact in the paint but faces more difficulty against quicker and more athletic opponents due to limited lateral mobility. This also contributes to some inconsistency in foul management (2.8 fouls per game in his senior season). He is a reliable rebounder (4.8 per game in his final season) and overall contributes positively on the defensive end thanks to his understanding of positioning and game situations.
IMPROVED AREAS
J.T. Shumate can benefit from physical development aimed at improving athleticism and foot speed, which would allow him to reach a medium-to-high level in European basketball and expand his defensive impact beyond rim protection. Offensively, developing a more effective off-the-dribble game, particularly through a quicker first step, would add versatility to his profile. Overall, he remains a player with interesting upside due to his technical skills and basketball intelligence.
