INTRODUCTION

Bez Mbeng is a point guard who spent his entire college career at Yale. Having followed his journey since his freshman year, Mbeng has managed to translate into on-court performance the improvements needed to take a decisive step forward in his development. In fact, he went from being a raw player averaging 4.8 points per game with an unreliable three-point shot to being named Ivy League Player of the Year in 2025, as well as Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year from 2023 to 2025.

PHYSICAL

Mbeng has an athletic physique that has become notably robust over the past year. He combines agility, long arms, and explosiveness – attributes that make him a decisive player on the defensive end of the court.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Offense isn’t his favorite side of the court, but it’s where he’s made the most significant improvements during his time at Yale. Overall, he shows good foot speed and body control even in challenging situations. Over the years, he’s developed a reliable three-point shot, improving from 26.9% to 36.8% on 3.7 attempts per game. Driving to the basket remains his go-to weapon, along with offensive transition thanks to his ability to generate steals. Two areas still lacking are his high number of turnovers (2.9 this year, partly due to increased offensive responsibilities) and his free-throw shooting (69.9%, with a rather unpolished motion). His ability to control his movements also makes him a solid passer, averaging 5.8 assists per game, though he’s not a true floor general.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Bez Mbeng is also one of the best defenders at his position in all of college basketball. He’s an excellent stealer, thanks to his long arms, explosiveness, and timing (1.8 per game). He’s also very skilled at emphasizing contact when attackers try to use their body, especially on pick-and-rolls and moving screens. Mbeng is truly an added weapon for any coach, even contributing 0.4 blocks per game – mostly on three-point attempts.

IMPROVED AREAS

Bez Mbeng is a two-way player who has become a real difference-maker – not just on the defensive end, but on offense as well. He managed to record an impressive three (!) triple-doubles during his senior season. He’s a player who hasn’t yet finished his development and maturation process, with plenty of room for improvement (starting with his three-point and free-throw percentages). If he chooses to pursue a professional career (despite having a degree from Yale), he will no doubt continue to grow and become increasingly impactful.
