INTRODUCTION

Isaiah Swope is a point guard in his third year in Division I. He began his collegiate career at Southern Indiana in Division II before moving up to Division I the following season with the same team as they joined the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). In 2023, he was named to the First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference, finishing the season with 15.6 points and 3.5 assists per game. For his junior year, he transferred to Indiana State, where he maintained nearly identical stats from the previous season and helped lead the team to the NIT final, which they lost to Seton Hall (where he recorded 19 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals). As a junior, he was named to the Second-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference. For his final year, he decided to transfer to Saint Louis alongside his longtime teammate Avila and a pure shooter as Gibson Jimerson.

PHYSICAL

Isaiah Swope has a small frame, standing under 180 cm (5’11”) and weighing 77 kg (170 lbs). He compensates for this lack of physicality with great quickness and foot speed. As will be analyzed in more detail in the “Defensive Phase” section, these characteristics can be a disadvantage defensively but make him a dangerous offensive player, as he maneuvers through opposing defenses with skill.

OFFENSIVE PHASE

Isaiah Swope is arguably one of the best point guards in the state. He is an excellent scorer who combines three-point shooting—both spot-up and off screens—with aggressive drives to the rim, thanks to his quickness and tight ball-handling. His three-point shooting percentages have fluctuated throughout his college career: at USI, he shot 42.3% from beyond the arc, while this season, he has dropped to a still-respectable 33.5%. He sometimes settles for difficult three-point shots (he attempts 8.6 per game, compared to 5.3 at USI, which partly explains the lower percentage). He excels at splitting defenses in pick-and-roll situations and has a court vision that surpasses what his stats might suggest (4.6 assists per game), demonstrating great chemistry with big men. After a pick-and-roll, especially in the mid-range, he punishes defensive rotations with precise assists. However, he tends to commit too many turnovers (3.1 per game) when faced with high-intensity defenses. He has a good ability to create his own shot off the dribble and in one-on-one situations.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

His slight frame is a key factor in his defensive performance. He can struggle against stronger opponents or when facing mismatches. In pick-and-roll situations and one-on-one defense, he is quick and has fast feet, but he can sometimes be outmatched physically, especially when fighting through off-ball screens. Nevertheless, he is an effective ball thief, averaging 1 steal per game. He occasionally faces foul trouble, averaging 2.5 fouls per game.

IMPROVED AREAS

Isaiah Swope is a ready-to-go player. He can play both as a point guard (his natural position) and as a shooting guard (thanks to his scoring ability, though he is most effective with the ball in his hands). His professional career will largely depend on his three-point shooting consistency and how he adapts to the physicality of professional basketball. Coming out of college, he stands out as one of the best point guards available.
