POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Arthur Kaluma is an American forward with a Ugandan/Cotonou passport (he has already debuted for the national team) in his final college season. He has had a high-level collegiate experience, spending two years at Creighton, where he averaged double figures and was named to the 2022 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. He then transferred to Kansas State for his sophomore year, finishing with 14.4 points and 7 rebounds per game, earning a 2024 Honorable Mention All-Big 12 (coaches). For his final season, he decided to transfer to Texas, where he is currently averaging 12.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.
PHYSICAL
Arthur Kaluma is an athlete who combines solid athleticism, mobility, and decent physical strength. These characteristics make him a significant defensive and rebounding threat. However, he lacks great explosiveness in his first step. He has a good wingspan, and his physicality allows him to comfortably cover both forward positions, as well as serve as a tactical small-ball five. His ideal role is that of a pure power forward.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Arthur Kaluma is not a big man who sets screens or does the dirty work. Instead, he is an excellent scorer with a reliable three-point shot (at least this season). He is currently shooting 40.6% from beyond the arc, whereas in the previous three seasons, he never surpassed 35%. He has undoubtedly improved his shot selection, raising his efficiency. If his three-point shot holds up, he can be an excellent stretch four in catch-and-shoot situations, including from the corners. He has good court vision for his position and is capable of finding the other big in the post with high-low passes (from the top of the key to the low post). However, he sometimes struggles with ball handling and decision-making, especially in congested areas (2.8 turnovers last season). Offensively, his game is primarily perimeter-oriented, relying mostly on one-on-one drives to the basket (including above-the-rim finishes) or pull-up mid-range shots. He rarely takes advantage of his physical dominance in the low post. He can and must improve his pick-and-roll/pick-and-pop situations, as he often cuts too early or moves out to the three-point line before creating an actual advantage.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
Defensively, Arthur Kaluma is a versatile player with good physical endurance and lateral mobility, capable of guarding positions 2 through 5, allowing for effective switching on pick-and-rolls. He is an excellent rebounder, as evidenced by his 7.8 rebounds per game (6.0 of which are defensive), along with 0.9 steals and 1.0 blocks per game, making him a well-rounded defender. This season, he has also been able to limit his foul trouble, which has often been an issue in the past (2.8 fouls last season).
IMPROVED AREAS
For Arthur Kaluma, confirming his significant improvement from beyond the arc will be crucial. His shooting percentages will likely drop, but remaining a consistent threat, especially in catch-and-shoot situations, will be key. He is already a player physically ready for the transition to professional basketball.
