INTRODUCTION
Luke Sutherland is a stretch four/five from Le Moyne. After two uncertain seasons as a freshman and sophomore at Siena and Bryant, with only 13 games played in total, Sutherland transferred to Le Moyne, where he showcased his talent over three seasons. In 2024, he was named to the Northeast Conference Men’s Basketball Second Team All-Conference.
Sutherland is a versatile and dynamic power forward (sometimes also a tactical center) who excels in all aspects of the offensive half-court: excellent three-point shooting (39.6% on 5.1 attempts), equally excellent vision and passing ability (1.8 assists), and a good post-game (able to use his body as well as create space with a reliable fadeaway). He often “dances” on the pivot foot before finishing with a hook shot. Overall, he is a solid offensive weapon with 15.5 points per game in 27.3 minutes.
Defensively, he struggles more. He can follow his man beyond the three-point line, but he sometimes appears less dynamic in pick-and-roll defense. He is not a great rim protector (0.8 blocks per game) and is below average as a rebounder for his position (4.4 per game).
Overall, he is a talented player who, if “protected” defensively, can be a valuable asset.
Editor’s Note: After concluding the NCAA season, he signed with the Bay Hawks in New Zealand, where he is averaging 15.7 points with a 39.8% three-point shooting percentage, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 34.3 minutes, thereby confirming the numbers and impact he showed at Le Moyne.
