INTRODUCTION: Spencer Jones is a forward in his fifth and final season at Stanford. Physically, he has a good wingspan and solid build. However, he doesn’t stand out for athleticism and foot speed.
His statistics are average with 10.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. What impresses the most is his ability to blend into Stanford’s offensive and defensive system. He’s not a player who needs to have the ball in his hands but he is a “system player”.
Despite a 39.8% in three-point shooting, he doesn’t overuse it, opting for clean shots often coming off screens. He exhibits a good ability to play near the basket, making cuts and low post plays, utilizing his physicality – a characteristic that needs to be integrated into a good offensive system to avoid clogging the area.
His body control is excellent, giving the impression of always knowing what to do (with only 1.3 turnovers). Defensively, he is an outstanding player, showcasing his ability to handle both 1vs1 situations and post-ups. He may struggle when challenged by a faster opponent, occasionally tending to remain too rigid on his legs.
Throughout the season, he has frequently alternated between games with 20/30 points and games with fewer than 5 points, indicative of a mental/concentration inconsistency.
He is unlikely to become the go-to guy for the team, but he is the type of player capable of being important and decisive without necessarily being in the spotlight (only 8.6 shot attempts per game in 28.5 minutes).
He was also nominated All-Pac-12 second team (2023).
