ACTUAL
POTENTIAL
INTRODUCTION
Jacolbey Owens concluded his high school experience with a buzzer-beater that secured Warner Robins its first State Title. He went on to Gulf Coast, a junior college, where he won the district championship. His next adventure was at Valdosta State, one of the top producers of players for European basketball in Division II, where he quickly established himself as the team leader and became part of the Gulf South Conference Second Team.
PHYSICAL
Jacolbey Owens has a well-sculpted and athletic body, attributes that provide him with a strong physical presence despite his lack of height. He possesses good baseline speed and an elevation that occasionally allows him to deliver highlights with high-flying plays above the rim.
OFFENSIVE PHASE
Jacolbey Owens is a skilled handler able to get his teammates in rhythm, with decent reads on pick and rolls that he can finish independently by attacking the basket thanks to a decisive first step or by pulling up with a questionable but fairly effective shooting mechanic. His three-point shooting is quite erratic (34.6% this season, slightly down from last year’s 35.8%) and he predominantly takes shots off the dribble, but be careful: if he gets into a groove, he can score 5-6 times a night, and he is a clutch player, with percentages in the closing moments of games tending to favor him.
DEFENSIVE PHASE
If the physical combination would undoubtedly allow him to have a certain impact, it is the dedication to sacrifice in his own half that represents a major hindrance. Being able to contain the direct opponent tends to face much more difficulty in rotations and mismatches, a certain defensive indiscipline that undermines his contribution to the cause, forcing teammates to do extra work to hide his shortcomings.
IMPROVED AREAS
Jacolbey Owens has very interesting potential but suffers from mental lapses, both offensively—where he loses too many possessions (about 3 turnovers per game)—and defensively. His free throw percentages are unacceptable for a handler, and he needs to ensure greater reliability from beyond the three-point line. This profile could aspire to mid-high European level if he manages to refine his flaws; he will likely spend a large portion of his professional career in second-tier leagues.
